We cannot speak on contact with this Cosmic Intelligence wisely if we do not recognize as very, very real the fact that this power that we are touching is creative. It has terrific drawing power; of course it does, you are contacting the very Spirit of Oneness. And this brings us to a very vital point. No concentrator should ever concentrate in a destructive way. The more powerful the concentrator becomes the more vigilant he must be to not even think in a way that would disturb or hinder another person. Never, ever use this power wrongly NO MATTER how great the pressure (you will be tested if you are making progress).
The power of concentration is a mighty power; the power of meditation is the power of the Soul, your eternal Self. The Soul can never be turned against itself, but wrong use of the power will harm the human personality. It amounts to an act of self destruction on the part of the individual. Only the personality suffers the consequences but as individuals who associates “self” with the form (and we all do to varying degrees) we reap the consequences. We are to employ this power individually to create an environment that makes the very Sprit of Life itself happy. When the Spirit of Life within us is happy, we as individuals experience the feelings of happiness and joy. As personalities we are happy because we have the power and intelligence to create, and creating is the very nature of our eternal Self.
Getting Started
The purpose of meditation of which we are speaking here, is spiritual growth, intelligence and power. Personal equilibrium, balance and peace are a natural outcome of this growth. The use of background music or a vocal guide is not part of this process.
First and foremost, we must have either a subject or a meditative statement, and it is of great help if you pick something you can really sink your mental teeth into, something that really interest you. For the purpose which we are speaking of here, which is our spiritual illumination, it must be a subject of a universal nature.
What is meant by universal subject matter? It is a subject that anyone on the planet could concentrate on, and if it is a timeless subject, even better. Why it must be a universal subject, is itself an excellent subject for meditation.
Meditation begins with concentration. We might use a small seed and concentrate on its properties, on the formula that is held tightly within its shell, and the power it has to grow and procreate.
We might concentrate on the evolution of sound on this planet. What sounds might have been on this Earth when only the mineral kingdom and forms were here? Spend time on each progressive step as you add new kingdoms of evolution to the planet. Do not settle for the obvious. You will enjoy the experience of new thoughts.
Please notice that these are subjects that we could have used 2,000 years ago and probable could use 2,000 years from now. Only difference is we will have more information with which to start.
We can also use statements of affirmation such as “the mind of God is alive in me. The mind of God is active in me.” “I am a spirit come from God birthless, deathless, absolute.” Dissect it. Explore it. Image it. Realize it and then quit thinking. Hold a silence. Feel it. We begin by thinking, linking thought to thought, and we keep bringing ourselves back to topic when we see we have strayed, and we will stray.
Do not berate yourself. Everyone starts out having a wrestling match with the physical brain. We just make the brain return to subject.
After we have gained some mastery of mind control, we can then practice “letting go”, so to speak. We silence the self, we beginning to listen, we feel with the spirit. It is not unusual for people to simply realize that they are not really doing the thinking. They have actually started to receive information.
